We often take for granted the surplus of food in our modern day lives. But, imagine having to send your child to school on an empty tummy? Imagine hearing your child crying themselves to sleep because of hunger pains?
For many, this is a harsh reality which they need to endure almost daily. However, there is a glimmer of hope for those who are in dire straits. This ray of light comes in the shape of the Food Forward SA Mandela Day Food Drive.
The 2019 Food Forward SA Mandela Day Food Drive in partnership with Pick n Pay is one of the largest national food drives in South Africa, providing much-needed basic food items to vulnerable communities.
As a community-driven initiative, the Newcastle Lions Club is stepping up to the challenge and will be participating in the drive. On Friday, July 12, Saturday, July 13, and Sunday, July 14, Newcastle Lions will be standing at the mini Pick n Pay stores in both Hutten Heights and Pioneer Park, as well as at the Pick n Pay Central branch.
The initiative sees shoppers purchasing and donating foods and other non-perishable goods to the cause.
But why is it so important to support this initiative? Why should the community donate to the 2019 Food Forward SA Mandela Day Food Drive?
“One of the reasons this is so important, is because it is all going back into the community,” says Nicolette Baney of Newcastle Lions Club.
Focusing on the community, Nicolette explains there are scores of children within our beloved town who don’t get regular meals.
“People don’t always realise how many schools have feeding schemes, because of the fact that there are so many children in need,” she emphasises.
The Newcastle Lions Club will be standing outside the respective Pick n Pay stores at the following times:
Friday, July 12, from 10am until 5pm
Saturday, July 13, from 10am until 5pm
Sunday, July 14, from 10am until 5pm
With the lives of children being implicated, will you be making a stand this weekend, helping the lives of the less fortunate?
