Will Australia take in South African farmers?

Will South African farmers be leaving for greener pastures in Australia?

This comes with Australian Minister for Home Affairs, Peter Dutton, claiming that he is considering fast-tracking visas for white South African farmers. But why would he want to allow South African farmers easier access to Australia?

Announcing his interest in the plight of local farmers, Dutton said white farmers are facing horrid circumstances. This includes terrible violence, murder and land seizures. In a media report, he claims one only needs to look at the footage and read stories on farm attacks to realise how terrible the plight of farmers in South Africa was.

However, his sentiments are being met with a certain degree of hostility. This comes after he was quoted in saying, “From what I have seen, they (white South African farmers) need help from a civilised country like ours.”

Dutton’s department has allegedly received several applications from white South Africans wanting to move to Australia. Applications which he and his department will be looking carefully into.

Some South Africans and a number of Dutton’s opposition feel he has been offensive. But it seems Australia’s Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, and Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, have allegedly put an end to the matter.

They have tacitly rebutted Dutton’s offer to help South African farmers on the sole basis of their race. Both Turnbull and Bishop have made it clear Australia’s humanitarian visa programme is non-discriminatory. Each application is viewed and assessed on its own merits. Furthermore, there are no plans to change the programme.

The farmer attacks in South Africa are a serious matter and we as the people who are dependent on these “part of  the land people”, have a civic duty to cherish and defend them, for without them all races and religions starve.

With no immediate plans in place for farmers to leave the country, it seems that business will go on as usual for now. What are your thoughts on the matter?
