Mere days before International Woman’s Day, March 8, South Africans bared witness to Babes Wodumo being assaulted by her boyfriend, Mandla Maphumulo, who is better known as Mampintsha.

Bongekile Simelane (Babes Wudumo), the popular gqom musician from Durban, streamed a live video on Instagram of Maphumulo assaulting her. While she has removed the video from her feed, on Monday, March 4, people were horrified when they saw her being turned into a punching bag. The heinous act taking place in a private space, most likely their bedroom.

Following the brutal assault, Simelane’s father, Reverend Mbongeni Simelane, says as atrocious as this act was, Maphumulo was not afraid to beat Babes up in front of her family.

One just needs to wonder, why did her family not intervene prior to the live video or protect her?

The video has created a lot of focus on her personal life. Twitter was ablaze with people demanding Maphumulo be arrested and punished for his deeds. Despite this, the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court has released him on bail of R2 000, Maphumulo is being accused of abusing Babes prior to this incident.

While he allegedly denies previous incidents of abuse, he allegedly has blamed Simelane for the abuse and claims she abused him to.

When questioned on her views about Simelane’s beating, UNWOMEN Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka claims the incidents shows that despite successful women seeming to have it all, they too face challenges. She says it is also important to ensure we encourage these women to leave their abusive lifestyles and that law enforcement kicks in as soon as possible.

With reports claiming Simelane fears returning home, out of fear that Maphumulo will kill her, one cannot deny that domestic violence is a harsh reality within modern day society.

What are your thoughts on the situation? Do you believe Babes did the right thing in exposing domestic violence through a video on social media? What steps do you think must be taken against abusers?
