Political violence is proving to be problematic in KwaZulu-Natal, with another senior ANC official losing his life in the Moses Mabhida region.
The ANC in KZN confirmed on Wednesday, February 13, that Mhlengi Khumalo was shot and killed. The incident took place on Tuesday night, February 12, while Khumalo was at his home in KwaPata, outside Pietermaritzburg.
Provincial spokesperson Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu explains Khumalo was shot at approximately 10pm, while he was watching television. Furthermore, Simelane-Zulu says that while he is believed to have been alone at the time of the murder, investigations are underway and the ANC cannot divulge further information.
According to the party, Khumalo was active within both the ANC and the ANC Youth League. Such was his passion for the ANC, Simelane-Zulu says Khumalo’s death will leave a gaping void within the party and KwaPata community.
Khumalo’s murder comes less than a year after the murder of ANC Councillor Musawenkosi Mchunu.
Mchunu was killed in May 2018 in KwaPata’s Ward 10. This is the same ward in which Khumalo lived. While this matter is still ongoing, Ward 10 councillor Nkosinathi Gambu is one of six men accused of being involved in Mchunu’s murder.
Khumalo’s death also follows the murder of Oscar Hlatshwayo, a senior Ladysmith municipal official. Hlatshwayo was gunned down on February 7, after taking his children to school.
The ANC extends its condolences to the Khumalo family during this difficult time.
