As the cold of winter creeps in, Newcastillians are getting their winter clothing out of their wardrobes and getting their trusty heaters and blankets at the ready.

However, while there are those who can snuggle up this winter, there are those who will bear the brunt of a bitterly cold winter. All without the comforts so many people take for granted.

Reaching out to those in need, Newcastle Lions Club is currently running its Warmer Winter initiative. A campaign which is designed to assist those who will be enduring a harsh winter.

“We work alongside schools and organisations who run feeding schemes. This year, we are working with eight schools who collect and donate clothing. The schools and organisations send us a list of families who are truly battling,” says Newcastle Lions Club president, Zarina Luck.

With the support of the schools, community service driven organisations, such as Rotary, and certain sponsoring businesses, Newcastle Lions will be distributing the donations to the needy within the first week of May.

“It is not just clothing though,” says Luck, “Vision screenings will also be done to determine if they require further eye tests and glasses which will be sponsored by the Newcastle Lions club. We also have some hairdressers who have volunteered to do basic cuts and trims on the day.”

While determined to ensure the less-fortunate don’t face a bleak winter, Newcastle Lions Club is looking to Newcastle residents for support.

Residents who wish to help the Newcastle Lions Club’s Warmer Winter drive can donate clothing (new or used), blankets, shoes and soft toys.

“Last year, we managed to help 130 people in need. This year, one of the lists we received from a local school has 150 people. This means that this year we hope to assist over 200 people with the community’s support!” says Luck.

With scores of children and destitute families in need, will you create a warmer winter for the less fortunate?
