Former South African President, Nelson Mandela, is an iconic figure around the globe. His life dedicated to the upliftment of the country, as he sought equality.
In honour of his legacy, July 18 is earmarked as Nelson Mandela International Day. On the day, people dedicate 67 minutes of their time to help someone in need. Rising to the challenge, Newcastle Lions Club will be doing their part for Mandela Day this Saturday, July 14.
Food Forward SA will be holding a Mandela Day Food Drive in conjunction with Pick n Pay. The Newcastle Lions Club will be joining the initiative. On Saturday, Lions members will be standing by the Hutten Heights Pick n Pay to help collect food.
Foods needed during the drive are:
- Maize Meal
- Samp and Beans
- Long life milk
- Peanut Butter
- Cooking oil
“There are so many people going without the necessities. Some people cannot even afford to buy blankets this winter,” explains Zarina Luck, chairperson of Newcastle Lions Club.
Encouraging Newcastillians to contribute to the worthy cause, Zarina explains the food will be distributed accordingly to those in need. The focus will be given to feeding projects at local schools.
“A person can’t expect children to go to school and learn, while hungry,” she emphasises.
The Newcastle Lions Club will be stationed outside the Hutten Heights Pick n Pay from 9am until 5pm.
Be sure to support the Food Forward SA Mandela Food Drive this Saturday, helping to make a difference within our community and the lives of those in need.
Nelson Mandela once said, “The true character of a society is revealed in how it treats its children.” Will you play a positive role in a hungry child’s life this weekend?
