Lincoln Heights Secondary prepares to host fun walk for cancer awareness

The doctor walks into the room, he sits down and begins talking. You have cancer. The wind is knocked out of you. The room becomes strangely silent as the news sinks in.

What do you do? How do you deal with this and do you tell your friends and family?

As cancer patients often face overwhelming difficulties and obstacles in the fight against the disease, how can we as a community show our support?

Education on the disease is often at the forefront in offering support to those who are combating cancer.

But what is cancer?

Cancer is a life-threatening disease which affects scores of South Africans from all walks of life. It is any malignant growth or tumour caused through abnormal and uncontrolled cell division.

If it is not caught in time, it may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or blood stream.

According to CANSA, 115 000 South Africans are diagnosed annually. Which is a frightening figure.

Men are susceptible in contracting the following forms of cancer:
  • Prostate cancer
  • Colorectal
  • Lung
  • Kaposi Sarcoma
Women are more susceptible to:
  • Breast
  • Uterus
  • Cervical
  • Colorectal

In the quest to promote awareness about cancer, Lincoln Heights Secondary School will be hosting the LHS Pink Fun Walk.

The event will take place on May 9 at the school, registrations will begin at 7.30am on the day.

Open to the public, entrance fee for the fun walk is R20. There will also be an array of stalls and pop up stores such as Wicked Waffles and Burger Shack.

There will also be a soccer competition and volleyball event.

Be sure to attend the event and do your part in promoting cancer awareness. In honour of the day, guests and participants are encouraged to wear white, pink or purple to show their support to those who have been affected by cancer.
