Entire worlds and new experiences lay within the pages of a book. Books are portals to knowledge and an escape from the mundane.
Walt Disney once said, “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.”
As one of the most imaginative and iconic men in the world, his words resonate truth. Very little can compare to that which can be found in a well-written book.
To promote reading, Hilldrop Heritage School is holding an initiative which is captivating its learners. The Reading Month for May initiative is seeing the school’s learners participate in a series of activities which promote both the importance of reading and literacy.
The first of its kind at the school, the initiative officially kicked off on May 2.
“We have planned a few activities for the month for the learners. We started with Reading Buddies. This is where the senior children read to the junior children,” says Jenifer Wichmann of Hilldrop Heritage School.
The classrooms will also have their doors decorated for the month according to the initiative. “On Friday, May 10, some of the children camped at the school and read their favourite books by torchlight,” Jenifer smiles.
Liesel Beneke adds another upcoming activity will see the children dress up as their favourite fictional book characters. Furthermore, guest readers will be reading to the children during the course of the month of May.
At the end of the month, children who read the most books and were actively involved in the initiative will also stand a chance to win prizes.
But why is reading so important?
Liesel says as every school subject is based on reading, the better the learners are able to read, the better their chances of succeeding in school. “It also enhances their vocabulary and exposes them to different things which they will not ordinarily be introduced to.”
Other benefits of reading include:
- Improving a person’s memory
- It helps you concentrate better
- Reading allows you to relax and reduce stress
- For parents, reading a bedtime story with your child is a great way to spend quality time with them away from social media.
In an era where technology reigns and social media is often an escape for children, Hilldrop Heritage School’s initiative is surely an opportunity to ensure books capture the hearts and imagination of the next generation of leaders.
