It’s time to get your running shoes at the ready. Come March 2, Newcastle Harriers will be hosting the annual Harcourts Battlefields Marathon.
For sporting enthusiasts, this is one event on Newcastle’s sporting calendar that is not to be missed. It is a marathon that tests participants endurance and fitness levels, uniting people with a passion for running.
The event will start at Huttenpark Primary School, with athletes having three divisions to choose from.
There is a 42.2km division, a 21.1km division and a 10km division. Each division will offer runners the opportunity to interact with each other, while taking them along the D96 to soak up the beauty which Newcastle has to offer.
The 42.km will begin at 6am on the day, with an entrance fee of R180.
The 21.1km will start at 6.15am and the entry fee is R150.
The 10km will begin at 6.15am with an entry fee of R100.
A temporary licence will be available for all the races, except the 42.2km where only KZNA and ASA number applies. The temporary licence will be available at R40.
Participants can pre-enter online at www.newcastleharriers.co.za The online entries close on February 15.
With the event set to start at exactly 6am on March 2, late entries will not be accepted on the race day.
Number collections will take place on March 1 at Huttenpark Primary School from 3pm until 8pm. As well as the morning of the race from 5am.
Refreshment stations will be available along the route.
Participants and spectators can also enjoy an array of food stalls. Spot prizes will also be given away on the day.
The event is also a Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans qualifier. Cut off times to make it into the qualifiers are as follows:
Comrades Qualifier – 4h50
42.2km – 11:30 (5 ½ hours)
21.1km – 9:45 (3 ½ hours)
