An elderly man has been arrested for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl.
The incident took place earlier this afternoon, when the perpetrator allegedly lured the child through a broken wall at the Paradise Sports Grounds. The perpetrator, who apparently works as the caretaker at the squash courts, offered the child a lollipop before leading her into the squash building.
After he sexually assaulted her, she reported the incident to taxi drivers who were stationed outside the school grounds. They then apprehended him. “I first thought two school children were fighting. I left my business and took a closer look and saw a taxi driver holding a man against the wall at the sports grounds,” explained Jairaj Boodhoo.
He then contacted Mark Jacobs of Two Eagles Security. As a security company for the Paradise area, Jacobs responded immediately. It was then that he found out what transpired. He and the vice principal both contacted the SAPS.
The school child was taken back into the school, before Jacobs took them to the police station. The suspect was taken into police custody.
Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube was contacted for comment. But, he was unable to give an official statement at the time of the article being published.
However, Seshni Jacobs of Two Eagles said the Paradise Sports Grounds is a haven for unsavoury deeds. “There is prostitution, drugs and children bunking school on a regular basis. The municipality has to make the grounds a priority, as children are at risk.”
Further police investigations will be conducted into the matter.
With investigations underway, Jacobs thanked the taxi drivers and the school’s vice principal for their assistance in ensuring the child’s safety and the arrest of the suspect.
