Traversing further into the phenomena offered within the digital world, St Dominics Newcastle now announces the release of its brand-new virtual tour ‒ set to change how people experience the school’s open days.
With this in mind and taking the current COVID-19 restrictions into account, St Dominics Newcastle is excited to announce their open day, taking place on Saturday, 22 May 2021, from 08:00.
However, the open day will veer away from the traditional setting of physically visiting the premises. Instead, visitors will be able to take a virtual tour of the nursery school, primary school, high school and other facilities offered at St Dominics Newcastle.
For the safety of our learners, staff and greater community, we have made the decision to host our upcoming open day online, rather than on-site. The safety of our learners always comes first, and we wish to be on the side of caution with the increasing number of COVID-19 cases being reported currently.
Executive Head Chad Moses emphasises, ‘COVID-19 has made it difficult for families near and far to visit our stunning facilities. We are delighted with our virtual school tour and believe that it will give prospective families the opportunity to see and experience a little bit of what we have to offer. Join us for your personalised COVID-19-compliant tour.’
Discussing the unique features of the online offering, Natasha Myburgh, the Marketer, explains, ‘The online tour of the school gives people the opportunity to look into the school from the comfort of their electronic device, regardless of where they are in the world.’
Moreover, she states, ‘St Dominics Newcastle is constantly striving to keep up with the times, allowing their learners, parents and staff to develop in this area. The virtual tour is just another part of our commitment to uninterrupted learning. We haven’t lost any academic hours due to COVID-19, as witnessed by our excellent matric results for 2020. The other grades have also carried on seamlessly and should we enter a lockdown again limiting movement, the school is then already geared to allow this to happen again without any interruptions as we have extensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place.

Due to the project being a mammoth undertaking, Myburgh explains she was involved in managing and organising the project. ‘I have been in contact with the producers of the virtual tour constantly to make sure the final product is in line with our identity as a school and with the Curro brand.’
Ensuring the virtual tour upheld Curro’s high standards, Myburgh says the recording of the footage took one whole day. After that, the producers spent hours over three to four weeks editing. ‘The footage was recorded on the school campus, using specialised video cameras, drone footage, as well as a state-of-the-art static camera that records images in a 360-degree motion to give visitors a virtual reality experience. So instead of visiting a regular 2D website, people will now be immersed in a 3D experience.’
The tour can be compared to using Google Earth to view places, Myburgh reminds. ‘In our virtual tour, you can view the school grounds, classrooms, sports field, boarding school and even our beautiful chapel. The tour will also have embedded videos of interviews held with management. The virtual tour will give people a glimpse into the independent school and what makes it stand out.’
