Newcastle traffic officer airlifted to Johannesburg following collision—Mayor comments
"According to the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) sources, the incident occurred at approximately 5.20 pm, when the traffic officer was driving his motorcycle down Sutherland Street and collided with a light motor vehicle."

A local traffic officer from the Municipality’s Community Safety Office is in serious condition after being involved in a collision on Wednesday afternoon, 12 May 2021.

According to the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) sources, the incident occurred at approximately 5.20 pm, when the traffic officer was driving his motorcycle down Sutherland Street and collided with a light motor vehicle. EMS sources explain, the traffic officer was treated on the scene before being transported to hospital. However, he had to be airlifted to a medical facility in Johannesburg for further treatment.

The exact cause of the incident is unclear but is currently under police investigation.  

Reflecting on the incident involving the popular traffic official, Nivesh Nair, describing him as an asset, Newcastle Mayor Cllr Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba said, “On behalf of the Newcastle Municipality, we would like to wish him a speedy recovery. We have been robbed of a dedicated staff member, and we hope that he recovers quickly in order to resume his duties.”

Forming part of the Newcastle Municipality family, the Mayor further stressed, if a member of its family unit was in distress, the whole municipality found itself in distress. “We will keep him in our prayers during this time.”
