Social media was ablaze, following an armed robbery at a jewellery store in the Pavilion Shopping Mall on Wednesday, 28 April 2021.
During the brazen robbery, captured on video and shared on social media, a number of shots were fired in the popular shopping complex, leaving shoppers and store employees in shock.
Westville SAPS communications officer, Captain Elizabeth Squires has since confirmed that a jewellery store within the mall had been robbed by five armed suspects.
According to reports, the store was closed, and staff were packing up the jewellery on display. With the glass door of the business locked, one of the suspects allegedly used a hammer to smash the glass door open, after which three suspects then entered the store.
They proceeded to go to the back of the store, where the safe was, packing jewellery into a carry bag. A salesman was apparently assaulted during the robbery.
While fleeing the store, the men were approached by a security guard. Determined to escape, the men fired a shot at the security guard, who in turn retaliated and fired back. However, the suspects managed to escape and fled the scene in a getaway vehicle.
While footage of the incident has since gone viral, the identities of the men are unknown, as they wore balaclavas and hats.
Two shoppers were also injured during the incident. Further police investigations are underway.
