Tragedy struck the small community of Utrecht on 10 April 2021, following the death of 10-year-old Muhamed Sibiya.
According to Utrecht SAPS, police arrived at approximately 2.30 pm on the scene, finding a child with a blue rope around his neck and the other end tied to a steel pole. Adding to the tragic scene, there were also burn marks on the deceased child’s body.
While the exact cause of his death was initially unclear, it was suspected the scene had been staged. However, during the post-mortem at Madadeni Mortuary on 12 April 2021, a doctor confirmed Muhamed Sibiya had been strangled with the rope, and the scene had indeed been staged.
It is stated, The Utrecht Detectives Investigating Officer, Detective Sergeant Henry Hayes, interviewed all family members thoroughly. It was then that the grandmother of the child, Mary Mdhluli, indicated she left Muhamed with his aunt, Nora Shaidar Sibiya, and her seven-year-old disabled son.
The grandmother claimed she had gone to the fields and, upon returning, found the boy, already dead against the pole, with the aunty nowhere in sight.
It was later discovered that Nora Sibiya had gone to a neighbour’s homestead, where she called her sister, Muhamed’s mother, who is currently studying in Durban. She told her that the child had been burned with warm water and that she should come home immediately. According to Detective Sergeant Hayes, Nora Sibiya did not indicate that the child was dead during the phone call. Only when the grandmother phoned her did the mother learn about her son’s heartbreaking death.
Through the investigation and interviews, Nora Sibiya eventually confessed to the family and the police, stating she killed the deceased by strangulation, claiming Satan took control of her. She was subsequently arrested on 14 April 2021 by the Utrecht SAPS and appeared in Utrecht Magistrate court on 15 April 2021.
It has since been established that the accused is a mental patient with a history of violence towards her disabled son and the deceased.
Bail for the accused was postponed until today, 21 April 2021, and social workers have been contacted and are involved in assisting the investigative psychology section from SAPS Durban. Further investigations are currently underway.
