At just 16 years of age, Suhaan Singh takes the scientific world by storm, making national headlines.
The St Dominics Newcastle science boffin recently won a bronze medal at the 2020 Eskom Expo International Science Fair. He demonstrated an advanced and in-depth understanding of the engineering category, producing research at an international level. He has also been selected to represent South Africa in the 2021 Virtual Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the United States.
This follows the teenager using a Lego kit to construct and modify a robot to automate the COVID-19 screening and sanitising process. Suhaan points out the current manual process of COVID-19 screening is inefficient and ineffective. Multiple personnel are required to operate the screening station to record visitor details when entering an establishment, followed by sanitising hands and scanning their temperature.
Furthermore, Suhaan added, “This causes a decline in work productivity and personnel’s working time to scan customers. The research conducted investigated ways to maximise the efficiency of the screening process by creating a mechanical means (robot) capable of executing the entire process.”
Newcastle Mayor Cllr Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba had a brief meeting with the young science whizz on Saturday, 17 April 2021, using the occasion to gain an in-depth insight into Suhaan’s genius invention and to explore avenues to support him where possible.
He remarked, “Suhaan’s invention is a clear indication that the youth are already leading the way and playing a critical role as we head to a digitised world. This robotics invention epitomises government’s efforts to encourage innovative thinking aligned to the fourth Industrial Revolution.”
Meeting in the Mayor’s Parlour on Saturday, Cllr Dr Mahlaba emphasised how proud the Municipality was of Suhaan. He enthused, “We need people to think out of the box like you did, as ordinary thinking only keeps us in the dark.”
With Suhaan set to promote both Newcastle and South Africa as a whole at the upcoming international science fair, the Mayor emphasised that contributions such as this should be taken seriously, as the teenager has pushed himself beyond the limits, thinking of something which scores of others have not. Cllr Dr Mahlaba stressed, “You are the Einstein of the day. Well done to you and your family.”
With the genius idea potentially becoming a game-changer in the fight against the viral contagion, Pixelfish Marketing and Newcastillian – Online News salutes Suhaan Singh as he prepares to put Newcastle on the international science map.
