On 10 February 2021, Kwanele Wandiswa Mtshali left her home in Osizweni, intending to make an appointment for her driver’s licence at the Newcastle Licence Department. Putting on a white T-shirt, black trousers and her Adidas takkies, she left the house at 5.45 am, eager to get a jump on the day. However, unbeknownst to her family, this would be the last time anyone would see the 20-year-old woman.
Speaking with Victoria Cebisile Jiyane, Kwanele’s mother, who says her ordeal began when she attempted to phone Kwanele to see how she was doing. But, upon phoning her daughter, Victoria says, “When I tried calling her at 7.20 am, her phone rang once and went off.”
The tearful mother says she immediately contacted the licensing department to establish if her daughter was there. However, it was discovered Kwanele never made it to her destination. Crying, Victoria emphasises that she is finished. “I am battling to sleep and eat. Kwanele is such a friendly and kind person.”
With Victoria and the police searching for Kwanele for over a month, Newcastillians are being called upon for assistance.
