Police embark on a manhunt after prisoners escape from holding cells

A massive search is underway after seven men escaped from the Volksrust Police Station’s holding cells on Sunday, 7 March 2021.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi explains that three of the escapees have been rearrested while three of the perpetrators are still at large. The remaining suspects are Mduduzi Khumalo, Paul Sambo and Bongani Sithole.

“The suspects were arrested for various offences including robbery, rape, possession of drugs, housebreaking and theft, as well as Contravention of the Immigration Act,” states Brigadier Hlathi.

With the three convicts on the run, police are appealing to the public, including their families, to assist with information that may lead to their rearrest.

Alternatively, members of the public can send information via MYSAPSAPP. All received information will be treated as confidential, and callers may opt to remain anonymous.
