Misconfusion and vigilante justice at the Newcastle Taxi Rank have resulted in a mentally disabled man’s death.
According to Detective Sergeant Khumalo, the incident took place at the Newcastle Taxi Rank on 21 June 2020. “According to our sources, the man allegedly climbed into a taxi and waited for passengers to climb in. He then allegedly attempted to steal it.”
However, his attempt to escape with the vehicle was short-lived. He was taken back to the rank and assaulted to such a degree he later died in Madadeni Hospital. Investigating the matter, Detective Sergeant Khumalo says the victim’s grandmother confirmed the man had a mental health condition.
Now eight months later, the police are facing the challenge of securing witnesses to the tragic event. Sergeant Khumalo points out, “To date, no one has stepped forward with any information.”
With this in mind, the Newcastle Police are appealing to anyone who can assist with information or who witnessed the incident to come forward. This will significantly aid the Police in their investigations and ensure justice prevails.
If anyone can assist the SAPS, contact Detective Sergeant LJK Khumalo on 084 691 9213. Be sure to do your part in seeing justice prevail.
