Crime is an element negatively impacting local communities, often on levels, many do not quite comprehend. However, living in Northern KwaZulu-Natal appears to hold not only the convenience of fast travel times and #thatbraailife but seems to be a rather safer option to reside especially when looking at the current index on many of South Africa’s top cities.
The latest crime index by Numbeo reveals just how South Africa’s crime has slipped into chaos.
Numbeo is the world’s largest cost of living database. It is also a crowd-sourced global database of quality-of-life information, including housing indicators, perceived crime rates, and quality of healthcare, among many other statistics.
According to Numbeo’s 2021 Crime Index by City, Pretoria is classified as the third most dangerous city in the world, with Durban and Johannesburg coming in fourth and fifth places, respectively. Coming in at seventh place is Pietermaritzburg.
These major cities are beaten by the likes of Caracas in Venezuela and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
Moreover, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town have also been identified as two of the most dangerous cities in the world, ranking 14th and 19th on the crime index.
Port Elizabeth and the Mother City are beaten by Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro and Kabul, Afghanistan.
It must be noted, the Numbeo Crime Index is a perceptions index, which is based on survey responses. In the survey, users are asked to score the level of crime in their country and city from bad (-2) to good (+2), where 0 is average.
Moreover, Numbeo states, ´To generate a current index (which is always updated) we use data up to 36 months old. We include only cities for which there are at least a certain number of contributors. Our semi-annual index is remade twice per year by pushing current index into this historical view.”
As a perceptions index, it does not deal with actual crime stats. Instead, it rather focuses on how safe and secure citizens feel in their cities, with the safety index asking how safe they feel walking alone.
While Newcastle and its neighbouring towns escape the Numbeo Crime Index what are your reasons why living in Northern KwaZulu-Natal is recommended?
