Four people died and two were injured, following a horrific collision on the R34, between Memel and Newcastle, on 4 February 2021.
The incident occurred shortly before 12pm, when a mini-bus and a truck collided. A source on the scene claims, “When emergency services arrived on the scene, we found four people that seemed to be occupants from the taxi, had already died from their injuries. The driver of the truck and the driver of the mini-bus taxi were taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.”

The source further elaborates, the truck had been travelling on its way to Newcastle, while the taxi was driving towards Memel. Allegedly, the taxi had apparently swerved to avoid a pothole, going into the lane of oncoming traffic. It was then that the two vehicles collided.

I have seen that people do instinctively swerve out to avoid potholes without considering oncoming traffic. The condition of that road, all the way to Bethlehem, is going to claim many lives yet. My sincere condolences to all the bereaved.
The state of the Memel road is just criminal. Authorities should be held accountable.
I am not surprised by the accident and I hope the families of the injured and deceased sue the municipality and the dept of roads as I drove on the same road this morning and its the worse road filled with pot holes that I ever have seen in my life ! we had to swerve all the way until pass Memel due to the potholes ! some holes 1.5m in diameter and half a meter deep ! That the good Lord due to the condition of the road we decided to come back via Standerton instead !
Yes that Memel road are a death trap with all those potholes. And they are just getting bigger and bigger by the day and no body is doing anything about it.
But motorists should learn to avoid accidents… It doesn’t mean if ther ar potholes in your Lane you will swerve when ever you want to…
