Newcastillians, brace yourselves for a Sunday morning without electricity. But fret not, loadshedding has not returned.

Head of Communications at Newcastle Municipality, Mlungisi Khumalo, highlights that on Sunday, 24 January 2021, the Newcastle Municipality’s Electrical Department will be conducting maintenance and repairs on 132kv substations (Aviary Hill and Glen).

The maintenance and repair work will commence at 5 am and finish at 11 am. During this period, Khumalo points out several suburbs will, unfortunately, have no electricity. These suburbs are:

  • Lennoxton
  • Paradise
  • Amiel Park
  • Sunnyridge
  • Pioneer Park
  • Schuinshoogte
  • Aviary Hill
  • Signal Hill
  • Barry Hertzog Park
  • Amajuba Park
  • CBD
  • Fernwood
  • Suryaville
  • Sunset View
  • Fairleigh
  • Lenville
  • Hutten Heights

Khumalo emphasises it is important to note the work is part of a mandatory exercise. It ensures the substations are kept running at an optimal level, which in turn ensures there are no unexpected power outages. Residents are encouraged to show patience during the duration of the maintenance work.
