A fiery inferno is raging at the Engen refinery in the South of Durban. This follows an explosion which occurred at the petroleum plant at approximately 7 am this morning, 4 December 2020.
Such was the magnitude of the explosion, that Garrith Jamieson, an advanced Life Support paramedic, stated the explosion could be heard from as far as 25 kms away. Robert McKenzie, KwaZulu-Natal emergency spokesperson, has also confirmed the incident, adding that six people are currently being treated for smoke inhalation.
At present, it is not clear what exactly caused the blast, but it is speculated some form of tanker exploded. The matter will be investigated.
