Newcastle Municipality hands out massive support to local small businesses

With a vibe of positivity in the air, and development being the key focus, a meeting was held at Osizweni Fire Station on Thursday, 29 October 2020. 

This saw the Department of Local Economic Development, as well as the Department of Small Business Development, handing out equipment to small business owners within the Newcastle, KZN community.

Offering insight on the initiative, Head of communications at Newcastle Municipality, Mlungisi Khumalo, explains, “The aim of this initiative is to assist these beneficiaries to grow their businesses.”  

Such is the current size of businesses, Khumalo explains that this is a momentous occasion for these business owners as this will be the first time, since starting their enterprises, that they will own assets and equipment.

Now let us take a gander at what the businesses received:

  • Laptops
  • Long Fridges
  • Gas stoves
  • Cash registers
  • Industrial Toasters
  • Baking ovens
  • Gazebos

Newcastle Municipality Speaker of Council, Cllr Samkelisiwe Yende applauded the initiative—saying she hopes this program will offer these business owners the opportunity to create job opportunities, especially for the youth. Elaborating in saying, “Small businesses are the lifeblood for our economy. As a municipality, we answered when our community asked for help. As small businesses, you will contribute towards developing our local economy. Let’s build generational wealth, and I hope you will all strive to sustain your business ventures.”

Yende further encouraged the community to support these beneficiaries. Stating, “As a municipality, whenever we need services, we will look to these businesses before we approach big businesses.”
