On 15 September 2020, being a regular Tuesday night in Vryheid, NKZN. Something quite out of the ordinary broke out as residents from the peaceful town became privy to a high-speed chase, watching law enforcement racing after a suspected drug dealer.

After being informed about the vehicle transporting cannabis from Paulpietersburg heading towards Vryheid, a multi-disciplinary SAPS team acted on information and according to Police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, the team of officers spotted the vehicle which was on the Stilwater Road in the Vryheid area and it was then that a chase ensued.

The team of dedicated police officials managed to intercept the vehicle on the Vryheid to Dundee Road. Upon searching the vehicle, eleven large bags containing cannabis all weighing in at a smoking 705kg was found. The 39-year-old driver was placed under arrest for possession of the plant.

With the estimated street value of the aforementioned 705kg’s being around R2 million. Do not think he will be able to claim it was for personal use under the new laws governing cannabis?!

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula thanked the police officers for their continued collaboration in the fight against drugs within the province.

Adding to the success of the SAPS, Osizweni police, determined to combat the ongoing drug trade. Arrested two men, the first for being in possession of 21 small parcels of heroin and the second for holding 54 mandrax tablets. These arrests followed the Osizweni Crime Prevent Unit and Policing area joining forces.

As stated in a previous article, the success in ultimately winning the war on drugs would simply be to remove the want for such products. Nothing kills an industry quite like low or now demand. But until people stop asking for these products, we thank the SAPS for their efforts and we hope they enjoy and develop on their successes.
