The debacle surrounding Newcastle Municipality’s former Municipal Manager, Kebone Masange, continues.
If you recall, the former Newcastle MM, was taken into custody by immigration officers in Pretoria, on 1 September 2020. This followed allegations around the fact he had multiple identity documents in his possession.
According to reports, Masange, who is currently, the head for Mpumalanga’s Human Settlements, allegedly lied to authorities on more than one occasion in the process of acquiring his identity documentation. Firstly, he apparently told them he was born in Johannesburg (Gauteng), then, adversely, in Pietermaritzburg (KwaZulu-Natal) and lastly, his story changed yet again, staying he was in actual fact born in Brits (North West). Baring in mind, in reality, Masange hails from Zimbabwe.
Facing charges of fraud, he has since been released from custody. However, as per the cliche saying, it appears the plot around Masange is thickening.
Creating an air of mystery around the case, a source from the Mpumalanga Provincial Government informed City Press that since Masange’s arrest, there have been two burglaries at the department, alleging the perpetrators were searching for documents.
Allowing Masange sufficient space and time to attend to the developments pertaining to his alleged contravention of immigration law, Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane announced, Masange has since been placed on special leave.
In the interim, as Masange prepares to face the charges brought against him, the Department’s Chief Director for Integrated Settlements, Doctor Nkosi, has now been appointed as acting head of department in Masange’s absence.
