The nationwide lockdown has affected scores of South Africans, affecting their daily lives in more ways than one.

Yet, as people find themselves adjusting to the COVID-19 pandemic, are we doing enough for animals?

As a great deal of emphasis is put on the challenges faced by people, the plight of Newcastle’s animal community has not gone unnoticed. In the pursuit of helping those who do not have a voice of their own, Newcastle Animal Rescue, Fliber and Perfect Water have joined forces.

“During this time, rescue dogs need extra help. There are also people who cannot afford food for their animals during this time,” explains Brian Addicott.

Brian and Joyce Addicott run Newcastle Animal Rescue; an organisation dedicated to helping rescue animals within the community. Through their work, they have noticed a need for supporting animals within the community.

Rohan Potgieter of Fliber explains the internet provider got involved, as it believes in giving back to the community.

“Everyone is struggling during this time, but we are forgetting that animals are suffering just as much,” Rohan explains.

In the pursuit of assisting Newcastle’s animals, Newcastle Animal Rescue and Fliber are inviting the Newcastle community to donate animal food and blankets. Donations of animal toys are also welcome, as toys will offer animals a form of entertainment during this difficult time.

Donations can be delivered at Perfect Water at Amajuba Mall.

“Perfect Water is situated in a convenient spot and is an easy drop off point. This is because people can drop off donations while shopping,” explains Adri Enslin of Perfect Water.

For those who wish to contribute to the cause, but are unable to make it to Perfect Water, Rohan and Brian explain that they can organise that the donations can be picked up.

Businesses are also invited to join the initiative, contributing to a cause which will alleviate the suffering of Newcastle’s animals.

As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
