The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent nationwide lockdown has affected scores of businesses and families alike.
As people find themselves facing a series of challenges and uncertainty, the time has come for people to unite. On Thursday morning, May 14, members of Newcastle Golf Club reached out to the staff of the golf course.
Since the implementation of the nationwide lockdown, the staff have been unable to earn a salary. This is due to the golf course not being able to source an income during this period.
With the staff waiting for their money from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), local golfers rose to the challenge in supporting the staff.
Dries Els of Newcastle Golf Club explains that through the golfers rallying together and donating money, they were able to purchase items from local supermarkets. This would assist the staff in feeding their families and themselves.
“We were really happy to be able to do this. On behalf of the club, a big thank you goes out to the golfers who supported the initiative,” Dries says.
The staff were appreciative of the donation, knowing that while there is currently no golf, golfers kept a caring eye on them.
Not only did Newcastle Golf Club extend a helping hand to its staff, its members also donated to the club’s caddies and caddies from the Kilbarchan Golf Club.
Well done to Newcastle Golf Club for opening its heart to its staff members.
