Sports enthusiasts have much to look forward to this weekend, with the Spur Sports Festival set to kick off on Friday, February 21, at Ferrum High School.
Approximately 1000 sports players from schools across Northern KwaZulu-Natal will be gathering to participate in a series of rugby, hockey and netball matches.
“We will even have schools from Pietermaritzburg coming down to participate in the event,” says organiser, Raymond van Niekerk.
With 14 sports teams and 13 schools ready to compete against each other, for the love of their respective sports, Raymond explains the purpose behind the event is to promote local sports at a school level; while acting as a fundraising initiative for the NKZN Primary School rugby players.
“With the upcoming Shark trials where children from NKZN will be participating, tournaments and practices, we are trying to assist parents with the cost.”
The event will also act as a fundraiser for the netball and hockey players, which Raymond explains both Spur and Ferrum High will focus on.
The netball and hockey matches will see both primary and high school players participating, while the rugby will be solely for u/13 players.
The event will end on Saturday afternoon, February 22, promising two days of action-packed sports.
Entrance fee is R10 per person and R5 per child dressed in their school uniform. School goers who are not in school uniform will be required to pay R10. Programmes will also be available at the event for R10.
Raymond explains the funds raised through the sale of programmes will also go towards the fundraising initiative.
While the sports festival promises to be an entertaining event, rugby enthusiasts have much to look forward to.
Keegan Daniel, the former Sharks Super Rugby player, will be attending the festival. He will be joined by Grant Bashford, the former Sharks Assistant coach. Both sports figures will be making an appearance at the sports festival to show their support.
Following the conclusion of the sports festival, there will also be an NKZN primary school fundraiser dinner with both Daniel and Bashford at Blackrock Casino
With two days of sports, be sure not to miss out and support Newcastle schools as they against teams from neighbouring towns.
