Loadshedding is yet again upon us, leaving scores of families and businesses in the dark. But what is the cause?

According to a statement by Eskom, the system remains severely constrained and unpredictable. As such, Stage 2 loadshedding will continue today, January 9, until Friday morning, January 10, at 6 am.

“We have lost additional generation capacity overnight with breakdowns of over 14 000MW. Our emergency reserves are also insufficient to meet the demand for electricity during the day. As a result, we have to loadshed throughout the day,” the power utility claims.

Eskom’s teams are currently working on the situation to return units from planned and unplanned outages.

According to the statement released by Eskom, owing to inadequate maintenance over the years, the system remains vulnerable to unplanned outages.

“We remind customers that loadshedding is an essential and controlled measure to ensure the integrity of the grid is not compromised,” Eskom states.

As Eskom works on the situation, the power utility asks its customers to reduce demand as a concerted effort can help to avoid or reduce the level of loadshedding.
