Four people lost their lives earlier today, November 7, during a ritual in Madadeni.
According to an official source on the scene, six people climbed into a river for the ritual. “They started having difficulties in the water and only two managed to get out,” the source claims.
The remaining four tragically succumbed to the waters and drowned. Emergency personnel were immediately contacted for assistance.
SAPS Search and Rescue, police, medics and Newcastle Fire Department rushed to the scene in Madadeni. However, only one body has been recovered at this time.
“The water is deep; I’m estimating it to be about six metres deep. Diving will resume and support from Ladysmith, Pietermaritzburg and Empangeni is on its way to help search for the three-missing deceased,” says the official.
Further police investigations are underway.
The Newcastillian extends its heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the families of the deceased.
