Five men are now facing jail time, following an act of vigilantism. An act which resulted in one man losing his life.
The incident occurred in Dannhauser on September 28, when a group of people were attacked by patrons from a local tavern.
Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube says the victims were allegedly attacked with knives and pangas, after being accused of attacking a woman.
During the incident, five people were critically injured. One of the victims died as a result of his injuries.
A case of murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened at the Dannhauser Police Station.
Immediately investigating the matter, the Dannhauser SAPS managed to apprehend one suspect after the attack. Five more suspects were found in Vryheid, after fleeing from Dannhauser after the attack.
A knife, used in the incident, was seized and will be used as an exhibit. The suspects are set to appear in the Dannhauser Magistrates Court soon.
KwaZulu-Natal police are strongly condemning acts of vigilantism, an act which sees members of communities taking the law into their own hands. Often using extreme violence in the process.
“Those found breaking the law will be dealt with, irrespective of the reasons. We always encourage our communities to work with the police in the fight against crime,” says Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube.
