With the scent of blossoming flowers leaving a fragrant smell in the air, Newcastillians are currently embracing the warmth of spring. However, it seems the new season has brought about a warm, charitable change in the community.

A vibrant atmosphere is set to prevail over Newcastle Corner on Saturday, September 21, with Planet Fitness’s annual Spring Fling.

Set to start at 7 am, the event has a dual purpose. The first being to celebrate the arrival of spring, with Planet Fitness taking all their classes outside.

“Everyone is welcome to attend, both members and non-members alike,” says Neil van Rooyen of Planet Fitness.

The classes on offer will be everything from spinning to Zumba, as well as Brazillian Booty Blast and 50 Shades Fitter which are two classes exclusive to Planet Fitness.

“While the event is aimed at having fun and focusing on fitness, we are having this year’s Spring Fling as a charity event in aid of Morester Children’s Home,” says Neil.

He explains that all Planet Fitness asks for, is that everyone who attends is encouraged to bring a donation in the form of canned foods, groceries, toiletries, toys, clothing or anything else which will benefit the children of the home.

“Alternatively, people can make a cash donation, payable online via Payments can be as big or small as people want, whatever they can afford,” Neil explains.

With the day dedicated to both fitness and the community’s children, Neil encourages people to bring their friends and family to the event to show their support for Morester Children’s Home.

As Planet Fitness prepares to bring the joy of spring and fitness to the community alongside a charitable event, Newcastle Bowls Club is also doing its part to make a positive impact on the community.

On September 24, Newcastle Bowls Club will be hosting its Cancer Bowls event, which is set to begin at 8.30am. Acting as a fundraiser for cancer initiatives, the day is open to bowler’s and non-bowlers alike.

The format of the event is any fours, with the scoring being in Pro 10 Format, three games and 12 ends.

Furthermore, on the day, there will be a Spider, White Board Draw.

Entrance fee is R400 per team, which includes a meal. Entries close on September 20.

For those that want to support the initiative, but want to refrain from playing, they can pay R100 and join the Newcastle Bows Club for a meal.
