Will Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba see the charges against him being dropped? Can we as a community expect him to return to his seat as mayor in the very near future?
As both Newcastle mayor and the chairperson of the ANC’s Emalahleni region, Mahlaba’s arrest came as a shock to many, when he was taken into police custody on March 22.
Facing a murder charge, following the death ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Wandile Ngobeni, as well as a charge for attempted murder, Cllr Dr Mahlaba’s case has made national news. Scores of people awaiting the outcome of the case. Especially, residents of Newcastle and the municipality.
On Tuesday, July 9, Cllr Dr Mahlaba appeared in the Madadeni Magistrate Court to continue his court battle. However, the battle has been postponed until August 15.
But why the postponement?
According to National Prosecution Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Kara, the acting DPP Adv Elaine Zungu will be studying representations and determine whether or not the case will proceed to trial or whether charges will be dropped.
While being forced to take 30 days’ leave and awaiting the Acting DPP Advocate’s decision, Cllr Dr Mahlaba and his supporters are maintaining his innocence. Both Cllr Dr Mahlaba and his supporters are claiming the charges he is facing are politically motivated.
With Cllr Dr Mahlaba expected to appear in court yet again on August 15, what are your views on the matter? Do you feel our Mayor should be allowed to take his seat after the conclusion of the case? Or do you feel he should step down?
