Gone are the days where people expect their source of information solely from print media and television. Thanks to the constant evolution and engagement of social media, more and more people around the globe are living online.

In January, We are Social and Hootsuite published its annual Global Digital Yearbook for 2019. The yearbook shows the state of the internet in countries around the world, including South Africa.

The report reflects data from several sources and research groups, including GlobalWebIndex, GSMA Intelligence, Statista, Locowise, App Annie, and SimilarWeb. This is in order to compile a full synopsis on digital trends and moves.

The report shows that mobile dominates the online world, with 5.11 billion unique mobile users in the world today. This is a staggering increase of 100 million (2%) users from January 2018. Furthermore, there are 4.39 billion internet users in 2019. This is a 9% increase, which sees 366 million more users than January 2018.

Social media has also grown tremendously over the past year, with 3.48 billion social media users in 2019. This has seen a total worldwide growth of 9%, with 288 million more users taking to social media since last year.

But where does South Africa stand in the digital world?                      

South Africa has over 31 million people connected to the internet. This is a penetration rate of 54% and a slightly higher figure than the 30.8 million internet users recorded in 2018.

The report also shows South Africans are online for an average of eight hours and 25 minutes each day, on any device.

How does South Africa fair on social media?

The report shows South Africa’s social media activity is one of the fastest growing in the world. From being ranked 17th in its growth, South Africa is now in ninth place for net growth, having added 5 million users since January 2018.

While the report does not give specific user numbers for each platform, it does give a penetration rate based on the total addressable advertising audience, the audience which companies can directly access. This information shows just how big the different social media platforms are in each country.

In South Africa, Facebook is the biggest platform with a penetration rate of 53%. LinkedIn comes in second place with a penetration rate of 18% and Instagram at 8%.

Twitter and Snapchat are standing at 4% and 3% respectively.

While both Facebook and Instagram saw growth of more than 4% among South Africans over the past year, Twitter saw a significant drop of 27%.

With over 31 million South Africans being online and the numbers growing, it seems South Africa is truly becoming a digital nation.
