Locking eyes with each other, two young men prepare to battle it out. Putting their bodies and minds to the test.

A buzzer sounds and the battle begins. The sound of their bodies making an impact, each one seeking dominance. The sound of the cheering spectators fades into the background.

For many, wrestling is more than a mere sport. It is a way of life, where one pushes their body to the maximum while teaching their mind to remain disciplined. Eric de Wet is one such individual.

Eric is set to compete in the upcoming SA Championships, where he will participate in both the senior and junior divisions in the 67kg weight category. The event is set to take place in Middleburg from June 21 to June 22.

“I have participated in the SA Championships for the past six years, of which the last two I received gold medals. This year, I am looking at getting a gold in the Junior division, while I will be doing the best I possibly can in the senior division,” he smiles.

Following the SA Championships, Eric will then be setting his sights on the National Trials, which will be taking place in September. At this tournament, he will be participating in both the senior and junior division, determined to be part of the South African national team for 2020.

As Eric sets his sights on dominating the wrestling mats, he was recently selected to be a part of the KZN Elite Team.

As part of the team, he will be participating in a series of upcoming tournaments in Centurion, Pretoria and Richards Bay.

Well done to Eric De Wet for making it onto the KZN Elite Team and good luck for the upcoming Tournament.

If anyone would like to join Eric de Wet in the Cougars Wrestling Club, practices take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30pm at the Kruin Church.
