A time of reflection, the Easter period is one of the most significant holidays on the Christian calendar.

It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, who was crucified and rose from the dead on the third day following his crucifixion.

His death and resurrection are seen as the fulfilment of the prophecy which spoke of a Messiah who would come, be persecuted, die for the sins of mankind and rise again. Jesus’ death not only sees him paying the penance for the sins of man, but it also signifies the victory over death.

Easter, April 21, follows a period of fasting called Lent. During this time, many churches set aside time for remembrance and repentance. A time where Christians re-evaluate their lives and relationship with God. During this time, they also focus on Jesus’s teachings, his life and his willingness to die for humanity.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Good Friday, April 19, the day of Jesus’ crucifixion.

But why are Jesus’ death and resurrection significant for Christians around the world?

As the foundation of the Christian faith, Jesus who is considered to be the Son of God fulfilled ancient prophecies through his death. Thereby giving the gift of eternal life in heaven for those who believe in both his death and resurrection.

During this special time, the Newcastillian would like to wish all its Christian readers a blessed Easter. May you have a wonderful and blessed time.
