Western Cape teacher makes child run in underwear

Teachers play an important role in a child’s academic development. But what happens when a teacher leaves a learner with deep-seated emotional scars?

On Wednesday, January 16, a 10-year-old boy was apparently made to strip down to his underwear at school by a female teacher. This follows her accusing him of wearing stolen shorts.

The young boy was taking part in his school’s athletics trials when the incident took place. He later told his mother, when the bell rang, all the children laughed at him.

His mother is now looking for justice, reporting the teacher at Vergenoegd Primary School in Delft to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

She explains she found out about the matter when she fetched her son from school on January 18, when he ran out of the school crying. Inconsolable, she says his friends needed to tell her what had transpired during the day.

Allegedly, the teacher thought the boy was wearing school-issue shorts. However, his mother says his navy-blue pants were in fact purchased at Pep.

The woman is fuming about the incident, demanding the teacher be fired. She explains her son is now traumatised following the incident.

Adding fuel to the fire, the teacher did not only make him remove his pants, but furthermore made him run around in his underwear.

Millicent Merton, WCED spokesperson, says the matter in under investigation. Taking the matter seriously, the WCED will ensure the learner receives counselling as they await the outcome of the investigation.

Do you feel dismissing the teacher is punishment enough for forcing a child to remove his pants at school and making him run around in his underwear? What form of punishment do you feel she needs to face for her actions?
