Asians defeat Phoenix during NDCA Saturday League

Under the sweltering heat, two cricket teams walk onto the pitch. Spectators wait in anticipation to see which team will clinch the win.

Newcastle Phoenix Cricket Club played against Asians on Saturday, January 12. Taking place at the Arbor Park Sports Grounds, this is a match wrought with tension. It is a match which brings an end to last year’s Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) Saturday League.

As Phoenix won the previous NDCA Saturday League, the team had high hopes of continuing their winning streak. Winning the toss up, Phoenix took to batting first with Graham Sharp and Riaan Krtizinger opening up for the team.

During the team’s 35 overs, Phoenix scored 187 runs for six. The top scorers are as follows:

Graham Sharp with 33 runs, Riaan Kritizinger with 48 runs and Ruwayne Chetty with 49 runs.

Asians then took to the pitch, determined to secure themselves a win. Asians managed to make 189 runs for 9 in 34 overs. Beating Phoenix by two runs, the Asians ended the NDCA Saturday league on a high note.

While Phoenix and Asians put on an epic game, the cricket fun did not end there.

On Sunday, January 13, the second half of the KZN Inland Premier League continued.

With 10 teams competing in the league, it seems Newcastle is doing exceptionally well. Placing fifth on the log.

On Sunday, Autobarn Parts People Newcastle Cricket Club took on Greytown Cricket team at Arbor Park Sports Grounds.

Despite the scorching heat, the teams put on a display of excellent sportsmanship. Despite the efforts by Newcastle, victory was not on the cards for them.

Greytown came out to bat first and secured a staggering 182 runs. Newcastle lost by 7 runs, making only 175 runs on the pitch.

With two days of cricket madness, the weekend was thoroughly enjoyed by sporting enthusiasts.
