Freaky Friday: The germs that love B&B’s and hotels, oh joy!!

Are you planning a trip out of town this December? Do you intend to make use of a hotel or a Bed & Breakfast establishment during your trip?

Why shouldn’t you? After all, the whole idea about going away and making use of an establishment is so you don’t need to stress about cleaning up after yourself. That way, you can unwind and relax. However, did you know that hotels, as well as B&Bs, are often a haven for diseases, bugs and bacteria?

Here is our list of the grossest germ facts that can be found in certain B&Bs and hotels.

Don’t touch that remote! Or the bedside lamp!

Many assume that toilets have a high concentration of germs in a public place like a B&B or hotel. But it seems that remotes, telephones, bedside lamp switches and the carpets have much more germs. So much more.

In 2012, the American Society for Microbiology conducted a small study on nine hotel rooms. What did they find? The society’s study shows remote controls, telephones, bedside lamp switches and the carpets have high levels of faecal (poop) and aerobic bacteria. I think I just threw up in my mouth a bit. These two forms of bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illness and other illnesses.

But, what about the cleaners? They do clean, don’t they? Well, researches found that items on the cleaners’ cart, such as mops and sponges, also have high levels of the same bacteria. Which means that it is being unintentionally spread from room to room while cleaning.

I don’t think I am going away any more this holiday season.

Bed bugs, of all things.

How often have you said goodnight and joked by saying, “Don’t let the bed bugs bite”? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but bed bugs do occasionally find their ways into beds, even if it is a business establishment.

Apparently, more than 40 disease-causing pathogens can be found on bed bugs. The good news is there is no actual evidence that they can pass any diseases on. Although they can bite. The bites start out as small pricks but can become enlarged, inflamed and cause severe itching.

That’s it. I am taking a sleeping bag with me on my next trip.

When skipping the bath and shower looks like a reasonable option.

No one wants to spend more than two days without a shower. But hotel and B&B baths and showers are not always as clean as you might imagine.

The study conducted in 2012 by the American Society for Microbiology found several rather unsavoury bacteria in the hotel bathrooms. How dirty can a bathroom be in the hospitality industry?

There are Dermatophitic fungi, which is very similar to athlete’s foot. Then there is E-Coli and an array of gastrointestinal virus.

Be sure to give the bathroom an extra clean before you hop into the shower and wear slops to avoid athlete’s foot.

STDs, the list just got worse.

I think I just died a little when I read this. I know STDs stands for Sexually Transmitted Diseases, but believe it or not, you don’t always need to have sex for certain diseases become your new itchy friend.

Some parasites such as pubic lice (crabs) and scabies can be passed on via infested towels and sheets. Which is why it is paramount to not use just any B&B or hotel. In fact, just ask for clean bed linen and towels.

Before dashing off for your December getaway, ensure you have your sanitiser and bed sheets are packed.

Unitl next week…..Have yourselves a Freaky Friday.
