Cougars bare their teeth at champions, clawing their way to victory
Newcastle Cougars Wrestling Club is dominating wrestling mats, with its members sinking their claws into competitors.
Danie and Eric de Wet both competed in the South African Presidents and Veterans Championships, April 6 and April 7, in Pretoria. Eric wrestled the Friday in the under 60s division, which consisted of competitors between the ages of 16 and 20 years.
He clinched first position, acquiring his South African colours. He beamed with pride, as it has taken him 11 years to receive his SA colours. Excelling at the tournament, Eric has been selected to compete in Morocco. “I will compete from May 2 to May 8, and I am super excited about being selected.” he exclaimed.
Danie wrestled in the Veterans Division on Saturday, which consisted of wrestlers between the ages of 35 to 45. Coming in third place, Danie is happy with his placing. I am 44-years-old and was competing against guys who are 36 and 37 years old.”
With both wrestlers bringing home medals back to Newcastle, both wrestlers are setting their sights on the future.
“We are now looking forward to the South African Championships in June,” Danie said.
The Cougars are looking forward to the upcoming championships, as it will be taking place in Newcastle. With a home ground advantage, the Cougars are setting to claw their way to victory. The champions will be divided into cadets, juniors and seniors, promising to be an enthralling weekend of wrestling.
